Overview

Jiri to Everest Base Camp trekking

The jiri to Everest base camp trekking route is a classic and challenging route that was popular before the construction of the Lukla Airport, which has made access to the Everest region easier. The classic route follows the traditional path taken by the early Everest expedition and offers a longer and more gradual acclimatization process compared to the Lukla – based trekking routes. However, some trekkers who have plenty time still prefer to start their journey from jiri to experience a longer and more picturesque route.

Jiri is situated in the lower hills of the Solu region- is a small town at an altitude of approximately 1905 m above sea level in the Dolakha district of Nepal. It is often referred to as the Gateway to Everest. In the past, trekkers and mountaineers would start their journey from jiri and walk all the way to Everest base camp following the traditional path. Therefore it gained significance in the trekking community due to its historical connection with the Everest region. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including terraced farmland, lush green hills, and scattered settlements. The region is also known for its natural beauty and the trek from Jiri to Everest base camp offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains, forests, and Sherpa villages.

The Jiri to Everest base camp trek follows a scenic trail through charming Sherpa villages, dense forests, terraced farmland, and high mountains passes. You will observe prayer flags and mani stones scattered along the trail, placed by the locals, trekkers, and mountaineers alike as an offering to the mountain, which is locally as Sagarmatha (Goddess of the sky) in Nepali and Chomolungma (Mother Godesses of the universe) in Tibetan. You will also pass through villages such as Bhandar, Sete, Junbesi, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and finally reach Everest base camp.

Everest base camp is located at an elevation of 5364 m on the south side of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. As a long trek, followed by a hike to the much–awaited Everest base camp will start with making your way to Gorak Shep, taking small steps as the temperature keeps dropping, and the path gets tougher. After walking an hour and a half in the rugged terrain with gravel, icy slopes, and loose stones, you will reach in your destination Everest Base Camp. The welcoming views of the 8000 m mountains of the Khumbu region, dramatic views of the Khumbu Glacier and Khumbu Icefall will wash away all of the tiredness.
