The Rolwaling valley trek via Tashi Lapcha pass is a challenging and adventurous trek that goes through the Gauri Shankar Conservation area and the Sagarmatha National park connecting the Rolwaling valley with the Everest region. It offers incredible views of the Rolwaling valley, remote and pristine villages, high mountain passes, glacial lakes and close- up glimpse of towering Himalayans peaks. 

The trek takes you through astonishing Rolwaling valley lies between the Everest and Langtang regions, northeast of Kathmandu. It offers a more remote and off- the- beaten- path experience, allowing you to enjoy the pristine natural surroundings, peaceful atmosphere, and breathtaking views of towering peaks, including Gauri Shankar (7145 m) and Melungtse (7181 m). Tea shops and lodges provide meals which are often a mix of Nepalese and western cuisine. However, there are some local foods of Nepal that you should definitely try while you are in a city. You should have Thakali Khana and momo, Dhindo and Gundruk, Sel roti, Yak cheese, and Nepalese curd are equally yum.

Altitude sickness

Throughout this trek, you will be trekking in the isolated mountain region for more than a week beginning from 2000 meters and ascending at the maximum at 5755 meters. As a result, altitude sickness is a real possibility at such a high altitude. When it comes to illness such as nausea, headache, difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, and uneasiness, one should be pro- active and inform your guide or team members.

To minimize the risk of altitude sickness here are some guidelines:

Stop and rest where you are

 Do not go any higher for at least 24 to 48 hours

 Make sure you are drinking enough water

 Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or exercise

Best time to trek

The best time to undertake the Rolwaling valley trek via Tashi Lapcha pass is during the pre- monsoon (spring) season and post- monsoon (autumn) season. It offers stable weather conditions, clear skies, and better visibility, making the trek more enjoyable.

Spring (April to May) season is considered one of the best times to trek Rolwaling valley with Tashi Lapcha Pass. There is stronger sunlight, temperature begins to rise and the days grow longer.

Fitness and Experience

Trip Itinerary

On your arrival to Kathmandu from Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), the representative from Nepal Holiday Treks and Tours welcomes you and then you shall be transferred to the categorized Hotel in Kathmandu to which you are comfortable with.

We will take 7 hours of drive from Kathmandu to Dolakha. We will visit famous Dolakha Bhimeswor temple in our way. Stay overnite in Dolakha.

Trekking begins from Dolakha. We will pass through scattered villages and terraces. The trail is in good condition and it is used mostly by porters and shepherds.

Leaving Ratamate, we will walk along Bhote koshi river. We will pass through forest of fir trees to pretty villages. The route is scenic with views of GauriShankar Himal (7145 m) at the backdrop. Stay overnight in Gongar.

We need to escalate uphill for most of the day. We will traverse through slopes and terraces. We will reach Simigaon in about 5hrs. Simigaon is a small Sherpa village of rich cultural significance. Stay overnight in Simigaon.

We will enter Rolwaling valley on this day. the trail continues through colorful rhododendron forest. We will follow the uphill trek gradually to Gyalche. From Gyalche, we will lower down to the river where we will prepare our campsite by the side of river.

The trail continues to climb up the valley. We will cross Rolwaling Chuu River at few points via cable bridges. We will walk through forest to the deep river valley, We will arrive at a point where river from Gaurishankar branches off. We will enter the Sherpa village of Beding where we will stay overnight.

Na is the highest human habitat in Rolwaling. Leaving Beding, we will take short walk through the meadow where we can see yaks grazing joyfully the alpine shrubs. Passing through fields of buckwheat and barley, we will reach Na where we will stay overnight. Fields in Na are surrounded with stone walls. Stay overnight in Na.

This is a rest day. It is necessary to take rest at Na for acclimatization purpose. We will visit Monastery in which Buddist sage Padma Sambhava himself is said to have meditated. We will enjoy the views of Tsoboje and Kang Nachugo peaks. Stay overnight in Na.

Leaving Na early in the morning, we will head towards Tsho Rolpa- the jewel of Rolpa valley. We will climb nearby Himalayan Lake filled with the chilling water of the glaciers. We can enjoy views of Menlung and Tibetan Side Mountains. The trail is sandy with rocks and boulders. Walking along the right bank of the river, we will climb up the rocky lateral moraine of the Glacier. Higher up, we reach the moraine barrier that holds back the Tsho Rolpa lake. We then walk to Tso Rolpa for the night.

We will move towards Trakarding glacier. We need to move along glaciers throughout the day. We will head west and follow the descending trail to Kharka. Passing through glacier’s trench under cliffs and overhanging rocks, we will prepare our camp at the clear ground on glacier for overnight stay.

Moving along glacier, we will reach the lowest point of the icefall. We will climb to Drolambau glacier which rewards us with spectacular views of sorrounding mountains. We will descend to Tashi Lapcha Phedi and continue walking to Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755m). From the pass, we can get panorsamic views of Khumbu peaks. We will enjoy sunset view and stay overnight in Tashi Lapcha.

We will have couple of hours of uphill trek before moving towards Pachermo. Moving through the snow slopes, we will reach final ridge. We will enjoy views of Khumbu peaks including Everest and lower down to Col from where we will reach Thangpo where we will stay overnight.

We will follow the easy descending trail from Thangpo to Thame village. We will visit one of the oldest monastery in Khumbu. We can get scenic views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru from Thame. Stay overnight in Thame.

We will follow the descending trail and pass through rhododendron forest to reach the bridge over Dudh Koshi River at Phunki Tenga. Passing by several teahouses, we will reach Sanasa where local Sherpa people sell the Tibetan goods. From Sanasa, we will move towards Namche where we will stay overnight.

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After arrival in Lukla, Overnight.

We will take an early morning flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. Once we land at Domestic Terminal of Kathmandu Airport, you will be transferred to hotel where you will stay overnight.

You will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport 3hrs before your scheduled flight, Safe Journey.
