Langtang ValleyTamang Heritage Trek

Langtang valley and tamang heritage trekking is a moderate and demanding trekking route in Langtang region that combines the breathtaking landscapes of Langtang valley with the rich tamang culture and heritage. This trek is suitable for the both beginners and experienced trekkers.


Langtang Valley is a Himalayan valley in the mountains of the north- central Nepal known for its trekking routes and natural environment. Langtang Valley lies within the Langtang national park. The park is well known for its populations of red pandas, Himalayan black bear, Snow Leopard, wild dog, ghoral, serow and more than 250 species of birds. Similarly, the park contains a wide variety of climatic zones, from subtropical to alpine. Approximately 25% of the park is forested. Trees include the deciduous oak and maple evergreen like pine, and various types of rhododendron. Along the trail, you may encounter wildlife such as musk deer, Himalayan red panda, monkey (langur) and various species of butterflies and birds.


The tamang heritage is a popular tourist destination in Langtang region, lies between the two mighty peaks of Langtang (3500 m) and Ganesh Himal (7429 m). The trek takes you through the culturally rich tamang villages, lush forests, snow- capped mountains, pastureland, and terraced fields. It also offers unique traditional lifestyle, customs and architecture of the tamang people. The tamang people originally came from Tibet as horse traders and settled in hilly parts of Nepal, several hundred years ago. They have kept a distinct identity with Tibetan roots, as well as their own language. About 90% of the tamang are Buddhist and follow Buddhism. So, you will witness colorful printed Buddhist mantra cloths are put up in various places in villages and towns.


1) Permits required for Langtang valley Tamang Heritage

To trek in the Langtang region, including langtang tamang heritage trek, you need to obtain a Langtang National Park entry Permit and a TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System) card. These permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or pokhara through registered trekking agencies or at the entry point of the national park.


2) Travel Insurance

Any trek in Nepal, including the Langtang valley tamang heritage trekking, demands travel insurance. When buying travel insurance, ensure that it covers high- altitude trekking and other unexpected emergency. Additionally, you may also obtain the additional coverage of other activities like hiking, mountaineering, and adventure sports. 3) Altitude Sickness

Normally altitude sickness occurs when you travel to a high altitude too quickly. Headache, nausea, tiredness etc are the symptoms occur when your body tries to adjust to the lower air pressure and lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. In such case be active and inform your guide or friends immediately.


4) Guide and Porter

All the trekkers are required to obtain services of licensed trekking guide or join a trekking agency to ensure safety and make most of your trekking experience. 5) Foods and Lodging

Nepalese Dal Bhat, is a common dish with organic and healthy fresh green vegetable curry. Tea shops and lodges provide meals, which are often a mix of Nepalese and western cursine (pasta, pizza, and spaghetti, momo, and noodles). You can also have tea and coffee with some ginger honey lemon. Additionally, Dhendo, Gundruk and pickles is also available. You will enjoy the Variety of delicious foods during the trek.

The accommodation is basic. Generally, the room has 2 to 3 small beds with clean mattresses, a pillow, and a blanket. The bathroom is available on sharing basis. Hot water is available for some additional charge. Most hotels now have geyser, otherwise, you will get a bucket of warm.


6) Best Season

Spring (March to May) and Autum (September to November) is the best season in terms of weather and view. Spring is a season of flower bloom and new leaf start to grow. The environment becomes green which give you fresh air and pleases your eyes. Similarly, autum is the festive season. One can enjoy the Nepalese festivals and know its importance. Temperature is neither too hot nor cold which fits for trekking. However, winter is also suitable for tamang heritage as the views are likely to be visible at this time.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Kathmandu to Syabru besi (1,467m/4,811ft)

Drive for a total of 9 hrs by local bus or private vehicle on a paved highway that twists and climbs over ridges to the Trishuli valley.We move through Trisuli bazaar to Betrawoti and finally on a rough twisting road to Dhunche. Here, You will enter the district Headquarters of Dhunche where your Langtang National park permit will be checked. A further 2 hour drive brings us to Syabru besi where we will stay overnight at hotel.

Day 2 : Trek from Syabrubesi to Ghatlang (2,238m/7,340ft) via Goljung

In while trekking you can experience some of the Tamang culture. You can see scenery from view point especially as you walk through a local village. The cultural show at Goljung and Gatlang makes your trekking a memorable one. Gatlang set high on a hillside among terraced fields is a Tamang settlement. One can visit a Tamang monastery and beautiful Parvatikunda Lake at Gatlang. Stay overnight in Ghatlang.

Day 3 : Trek from Gatlang to Tatopani (2,607m/8,550ft)

On the way you enjoy the sightseeing of the Langtang range and Ganesh Himal. At Tatopani which naturally signifies ‘hot water’, you can take a hot bath in natural hot springs with bathing areas in the lap of the mountains. It is believed that taking a dip into this spring will heal you from your aches and pains. This day’s trekking provides you an opportunity to experience the Tamang culture. Stay overnight at local people house.

Day 4 : Trek from Tatopani to Thuman (2,338m/7,668ft) via Nagthali (3,165m/10,381ft) and Bimthang

En route you may encounter animals like monkeys and deer. The panoramic view of Langtang, Kerung, Ganesh Hima and Sanjen ranges can be distinctly experienced from Nagthali. Nagthali used to be a popular meditation center for the local monks and priests. Another cultural village, Thuman, is popular for its Shamanic performances and beautiful view of Langtang. Beautiful views of the mountains can be seen from every house in Thuman. Stay overnight at Thuman.

Day 5 : Trek from Thuman to Timure (1,762m/5,779ft)

While trekking from Thuman to Timure you can visit nearby historical Rasuwagadi. This day’s trekking grants you an opportunity to observe Tibetan Burman Tamang culture in two of the villages on the way. Timure is on the old trade route to Tibet. A fort here is a historical reminder of the Nepal Tibetan relations that have existed for many centuries. A suspension bridge here links Nepal and Tibet. Stay overnight in Timure.

Day 6 : Trek from Timure to Briddim (2,229m/7,311ft)

You can experience the village life of Briddim and enjoy a cultural show performed by community members. You can also experience a home stay and Tamang culture. To mention a little about Briddim, it is a Tibetan Buddhist village in the bosom of Langtang Himal. Around 43 houses are spread in a Z shape. Most of the houses are made up of stone and have roofs of split shake. As direct descendants of ancient Tibetan immigrants, the culture and tradition of Briddim closely resembles that of Tibetan villages. Stay overnight in Briddim.

Day 7 : Trek from Bridim to Lama Hotel (2,340m/7,675ft)

Village walk at Briddim, observing the local lifestyle and culture, and interacting with the locals. Trekking from Briddhim – Lamahotel. En route to Langtang, the settlement of Lamahotel is located on the banks of Langtang river and surrounded by lush forests and mountains from here start the tea house lodge basis accommodation. Stay overnight in Lama Hotel.

Day 8 : Lama Hotel to Langtang Valley (3330 m/10922ft)

Trek through rhododendron & pine forested area for about 3 hrs to reach Ghora Tabela for lunch. After a further 3 hrs trek the trail reaches Langtang village inhabited by Buddist Tamangs and Tibetans. Stay overnight in Langtang Valley.

Day 9 : Langtang Valley to Kyanjing Gompa (3,730 m/12,234ft)

The trek continues further with views of the himalayan scenery. The path is easier, crossing many stones for about 3hrs and reaches Kyanjing Gompa where we will have lunch and stop for the night. Here you can relax, explore the surroundings and enjoy beautiful views of Mt. Ganchempo & Langtang Himal. Stay overnight at teahouse lodge.

Day 10 : Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2,340m/7,675ft)

Enjoy you breakfast with beautiful mountain views. We then continue on the trek down to the langtang valley and further on to Ghora tabela for lunch. Afterwards, trek down to Lama Hotel for the overnight stay. This is a long day but the walk is easy as it is mostly downhill. Stay overnight at teahouse lodge.

Day 11 : Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi (1,467m/4,811ft)

Trek back all the way down hill to Syabru besi it takes about  5 hour walk  and over night at Syabru besi. Stay overnight at teahouse lodge.

Day 12 : Syabru Besi to Kathmandu

In the morning drive back to Kathmandu by Local bus or private vehicle. The drive takes 9 hrs to Kathmandu.
